Tonal, a leader in intelligent strength training, has named Todd Bartee as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. The announcement marks a pivotal leadership transition as the company embarks on its next phase of growth and innovation.
A new chapter for Tonal
With over 175,000 members, Tonal has established itself as a pioneer in the home strength training category, combining cutting-edge hardware with advanced digital resistance technology, expert coaching, and science-backed programming. The company has seen consistent year-over-year growth and continues to focus on enhancing its products and member experience.
As Bartee steps into his new role, Tonal plans to strengthen its focus on software development, artificial intelligence (AI), and personalization, while also expanding its presence through retail partnerships. These strategic efforts align with the company’s mission to emphasize the long-term health benefits of strength training.

Todd Bartee’s leadership experience
Todd Bartee brings extensive experience in scaling consumer brands and leading growth-stage companies. Prior to joining Tonal, Bartee served as an Operating Partner at L Catterton, where he worked closely with the company on strategy, operations, and value creation. He also held CEO positions at Aquasana and Taxa Outdoors, helping both organizations achieve significant growth and operational expansion. Earlier in his career, Bartee held senior sales and marketing roles at Dell Technologies.
"Tonal has built something special by bringing together intelligent hardware, great coaching, and real strength data in one experience", Bartee said. "That foundation gives us a real advantage as we continue integrating software and AI more deeply into how people train. I’m focused on making the product even more personalized and effective, expanding access through retail, and helping more members build strength that lasts. We’re just beginning to unlock what’s possible."
A planned leadership transition
Bartee takes over from Darren MacDonald, Tonal’s outgoing CEO, as part of a planned transition. MacDonald, who announced the leadership change with Bartee to employees last week, expressed confidence in the company’s future direction under Bartee’s leadership.
"It has been an honor to serve our members and team", MacDonald shared. "I am proud of what we’ve achieved together and confident that Todd will lead Tonal to even greater heights."
Jack Lazar, Chairman of Tonal’s Board of Directors, also voiced his support for Bartee’s appointment. "We’re excited for Todd to build on the momentum of the team. He understands the business deeply and brings the operational discipline and leadership experience to lead Tonal in its next phase", Lazar said.
Looking ahead
Under Todd Bartee’s guidance, Tonal plans to continue its investment in product development, enhance member experiences, and widen access to its offerings through strategic retail initiatives. With its strong foundation and clear focus on innovation, the company aims to further solidify its leadership in the intelligent strength training category.
